Re: Social Security Benefit Repayment SSA 521 Questions

In our situation, my husband's ex-wife has claimed benefits based on his record.  Would he need to pay back her benefits also?   If he files a 521 with intent to reapply, do they inform you of the amounts to be repaid prior to granting it?  Or do they grant it, then send you a bill?

Thanks for your help - it's hard to find any where to get information on this process.

    Carol,

Sadly, there aren't clear answers to your questions. Basically, we're all working from a very limited sample of specific cases. I spoke with economist Larry Kotlikoff about this last week and one reapplicant he is following is encountering all kinds of delays and uncertainties.

My husband applied 6 months ago and then again 1 month ago.

    He is getting stone walled.

Is there a way to speed up the process?

    Thanks

The reapplication for benefits process exists but it is very rarely used. That's why there is so little information about it. Let me put it in some perspective. I was recently told that year-to-date the total number of reapplications is about 200.

This morning I visited the local Social Security office and asked how many offices Social Security had around the country. "About 3,600," I was told.
