    Couch Potato Newbie

My academic institution recently made changes that allow us to invest in 403b plans other than TIAA-CREF. I am 40 and have around $100k in the TIAA-CREF. Time to do something different. I want to start putting $500/month in Vanguard funds. Can you recommend 3-5 Vanguard funds that fit the Couch Potato Investing model. I am in it for the long haul. Current market fluctuations don't concern me. Thanks, Tim FYI - I am having a hard finding the original couch potato investing articles. Can you provide a link to these achieved articles?

    Tim,

Why I cannot answer your questions directly and I am sure there are tons of members here who will help you.  I can help you find the answer you are looking for with many of the options on this site.  If you are looking for the couch potato funds in Vanguard you will find them on this page:

    http://assetbuilder.com/Investing/inv_potato.aspx

There is a list of 10 funds on this page,  in order from top to bottom.  If you would like to get into the original couch potato you would invest your funds 50/50 in the first two funds.  If you would like the Margarita you would invest your money equally between the first three.  If you would like the four square you invest your money equally between the first four funds.  And the pattern keeps going.

American Century has closed their bond fund but in this forum Scott gives some alternatives

If you are interested in the Articles Scott has written there are two ways in which to find the database of couch potato articles.  The first is our search feature.  In the header of the site is a search bar with an advanced feature.  If you click on one of our sections like "Scott's Articles"  you will see a blank search bar and a bar that says "Scott Burns' Articles." That gives you the option to search all of his articles for certain words or phrases.  Here is the link for the couch potato phrase:

The other way is to use the categories on the right side of his articles. Once in the section "Scott's Articles" you will see a green bar on the right side listed categories. On this green bar is a list of his articles in categories.  If you click on the couch potato tag you will be taken to his couch potato section which is only articles that are about his couch potato portfolios. Here is the link to that section:

    Have a great day!
