article on financial planning for young women

I'm a long time reader and follower of Scott's articles.  I seem to recall an article about financial planning for a women just starting a career.  My niece is in this category and is asking for advice.  I've been looking and can't seem to find the article.  Help!

     Thanks,Bob

    Bob,

I don't recall writing a column about that. But the advice for a young woman would be the same as the advice for a young man. In your 20s and starting a career your biggest asset is yourself--- your education, skills, and (however limited) your experience. The best thing you can do at that stage is to stay mobile and as debt-free as possible because the biggest financial advances you can make are in salary discussions. If you are afraid to look for work elsewhere, you'll come out of every salary discussion short and advances in salary are a big deal.

This means keeping credit card debt low, avoiding commitments like car leases or big car payments, and avoiding buying a condo or house. With the house/condo the odds are that you'll need to move and sell before you can enjoy enough appreciation to overcome the heavy duty transaction expenses.

    Scott
