    Tax on Dividends

Upon reviewing my Ameritrade taxable account statement,  I see they are classifying dividends on my ETF's as ordinary dividends. These are VTI, VBR ,VFH and other indexes that hold only US stocks. They classify individual US stocks as qualified dividends, subject to a lower tax rate. I was unaware ETF's were treated differently for tax purposes. Is this inaccurate reporting by the brokerage or is this true information. This would be a consideration for one deciding whether to abandon individual stocks for a lazy ETF portfolio.

It is probably an error, or perhaps something where they make the determination at the end of the year.  I also have some VTI (at a different broker), and I checked my 2007 1099 and 100% of the dividends were classified as qualified.

My accounts aren't with Ameritrade but I've had the same experience as Irishbrigage--- dividends from ETFs were qualified dividends.
