Why I became a financial advisor

Our earliest life experiences can have a significant impact on the choices we make in the future.  This certainly proves true in my case. The choices I have made that led me to where I am today, and the career I chose to pursue are very personal. Growing up, I watched my mother wrestle with managing her finances. She went through a lot of trial and error, worked hard, and saved up, but didn’t have proper guidance. If she’d had the opportunity to work with a trusted financial advisor, she could have made a lot more progress in realizing her financial goals and dreams.

I learned early on that proper financial management is something many people struggle with, either because of lack of time or information. Money, and how much or little you have, can significantly affect your quality of life. It determines which options are available to you, drives your decision-making, and can bring either security or headaches. I pursued this career wholeheartedly because in helping people with their money, I was also helping them with the rest of their lives.

My Career Path

Knowing I wanted to pursue a career in the financial services industry, I studied finance in college, first at Texas A&M, then later at Dallas Baptist University, graduating with a degree in finance. Initially, I worked as a loan officer for a mortgage company the first few years out of college. While this job was a more indirect way of working in the financial field, it helped get my foot in the door and provided valuable experience. I worked as an account manager for various credit unions across the country, a position in which I learned how to effectively meet the needs of clients from diverse financial backgrounds. This led me to where I am today, working as an Investment Advisor Representative for AssetBuilder, Inc.

In my current role, I am also responsible for setting up and maintaining client accounts. However, now I mainly work with pre-retiree professionals looking for an alternative to the traditional market-timing approach to investment management. I focus on building long-term relationships with my clients and providing a personal touch when managing their accounts. I approach each client as an individual and understand that their investments are not merely a number but represent their time, passions, and goals for their future.

The Best Part

There are many aspects of my job that I love, but one of the most fulfilling is getting to help people who typically don’t have or don’t want access to traditional financial advice. I get to serve a demographic of people who are underserved or overlooked by traditional firms in the industry. Our clients want simple, straightforward, time-tested advice and a personal approach to managing their investments. It’s also incredibly satisfying to be able to add value without charging high fees.

Every job has a downside or two, but most people stay in their profession because they ultimately love what they do and there are more good days than bad. On more difficult days, thinking about my mother and knowing I’m helping others like her become more financially stable gives me a sense of satisfaction that carries me through. Ultimately, I work hard at what I do because I get to make a difference in others’ lives and provide the kind of support, I wish my mother had been given.
